Conducting for one evening

"What if you could lead the orchestra or choir yourself for once?"

Fun to do

You feel the music flow through your entire body whilst dozens of musicians follow your movements. Pure control and harmony combined.

Three first steps

  1. 1First join a choir or amateur orchestra in your area as an active member. You'll get the best perspective on conducting when you know what it's like to sing or play in the group. You'll also build trust with the conductor — which you'll need later.
  2. 2In parallel, take a conducting course. In the Netherlands you can start with a short orientation course (a few evenings) and move on to a 10-week basic course. The four resources below are great starting points — pick what is close by or fits online.
  3. 3After a few months, when you sense the course is paying off and the conductor sees you as an engaged member, ask whether you may conduct a simple piece during a rehearsal. Start small (one song), practise at home in front of the mirror, and slowly build up to a full evening.
