Where do you celebrate the most fun Carnival?

Carnival is for many people the moment to break through winter. Briefly escape from your normal rhythm, head into the city, music on the streets and days when nobody takes each other too seriously. Yet the carnival celebration differs enormously per location. In one city it feels like a big folk festival with parades and traditions, in another more like a long weekend of going out. That's why it pays to consciously choose where you go. The atmosphere, crowds and setup largely determine what your days will look like. Are you looking for full squares and party tents or rather a friendly parade with local associations? In the Netherlands you'll find enough options for both. These are locations where carnival comes into its own again every year. ## Oeteldonk with tradition and recognizable atmosphere Den Bosch, transformed into Oeteldonk during carnival, is known for its strong traditions and fixed rituals. The city colors red, white and yellow, while virtually everyone walks around in the same farmer's smock with emblems. This immediately creates a feeling of togetherness. The celebration takes place mainly in the center, with cafés, squares and music on the street. During the day there are parades and official moments, in the evening it shifts to pubs and party locations. The atmosphere is exuberant, but friendly. It feels less like a festival and more like a collective city celebration. It's precisely this mix of tradition and accessibility that makes Den Bosch a fixed choice for many people. ## Kruikenstad with big celebrations and long days Tilburg takes it bigger. Here carnival revolves around scale, pace and many different party venues. Spread throughout the city you'll find tents, squares and pubs where there's virtually continuous music. During the day there are parades and activities, but especially in the evening the city really comes to life. You can easily walk from place to place and something is happening everywhere. This makes it feel more dynamic and energetic than in smaller cities. Tilburg is for those who are looking for a long weekend of going out with friends during carnival. The pace is high here and the celebrations continue door tot diep in de nacht.

Maastricht met bourgondische gezelligheid

Maastricht has its own character. Carnival here is less massive and feels more bourgeois. Think of smaller cafés, live music and long afternoons that naturally flow into evenings.

The city center with squares like the Vrijthof and the Markt forms the heart of the celebration. People take their time, chat and hang around. The pace is somewhat slower, making it feel less rushed than in larger party cities.

If you love atmosphere, coziness and a combination of culture and celebration, then Maastricht is a good fit. You can easily switch between watching a parade, eating somewhere and then going to a pub afterwards.

Lampegat as accessible all-rounder

Eindhoven, called Lampegat during carnival, is an accessible middle ground. Large enough for many party locations, but manageable enough to easily find each other again. This makes it practical when you go with a group.

The city combines parades, outdoor parties and indoor venues. You can choose from busy squares or smaller pubs. This allows you to easily plan your day yourself. Walking around the city during the day, finding a regular spot in the evening.

For many people, Eindhoven therefore feels like a safe, versatile option without extreme crowds.

Smaller villages with local charm

Besides the well-known cities, smaller villages are often surprisingly fun. There, carnival is less about masses and more about community. Almost everyone knows each other and the program is organized by local associations.

Parades are creative and personal, pubs are full of familiar faces and the celebration feels more intimate. You notice that it's not just about going out, but about creating something together. If you prefer not to have huge crowds, but still want to experience the atmosphere, a village in Brabant or Limburg is often a good choice.

Smart planning for a relaxed weekend

Wherever you go, a bit of preparation makes the difference. Carnival can be busy, especially in popular cities. Trains are packed and accommodations get booked quickly. It helps to arrange transportation in time and agree on a fixed meeting place with your group. It also pays to start during the day. Then you experience more of the city and don't have to rush in the evening.

By planning it practically, it stays fun and you avoid being mainly busy with logistics.

Carnival is ultimately what you make of it yourself. Choose a city that fits your pace and atmosphere, make plans with friends and let the rest happen naturally. With a good location and flexible planning, it quickly becomes a weekend you'll look back on for a long time. Where will you celebrate it?
