On the way to X

Stopping work sounds simple. But there's more to it than a farewell party and a new weekly schedule. Below are seven themes that people before you wrestled with — not to worry about, but to think about. Take your time, skip what doesn't apply, start where it pinches.

Financial clarity

The numbers suddenly get concrete. What you thought a "quiet life" cost can differ significantly from what you actually spend when you have whole weeks to fill — walks, museums, coffee out. Below a few starting points to get a feel for your new household budget. Not to tick off, but as a guide for a conversation with yourself, your partner, or an independent advisor.

Suggested checklist· 5 points
  • List all income sources (state pension, occupational, annuities, savings)
  • Calculate fixed monthly costs and hobby budget
  • Check healthcare buffer and deductibles
  • Talk to an independent advisor if uncertain
  • Plan large expenses (car, renovation, travel) deliberately

Social & connection

For many, their biggest social network disappeared the day they said goodbye. No coffee-machine chats, no incidental visits, no "shall we drop by tomorrow?". That hits harder than expected. Below a few pointers to build new connections deliberately — without suddenly joining ten clubs.

Suggested checklist· 5 points
  • Stay in touch with former colleagues (alumni group?)
  • Join an association that matches your interests
  • Schedule regular social moments (walking club, coffee, choir)
  • Invest in new friendships — not only 'old' ones
  • Consider volunteering — structure plus connection

Health & vitality

Suddenly all the time in the world — and yet a new inertia creeps in. Eating when you're hungry, not when the meeting ends. Moving because you can, not because you must. The points below aren't here to discipline your life, but to gently anchor your rhythm in something sustainable.

Suggested checklist· 5 points
  • Movement: at least 150 min/week (walking, cycling, swimming)
  • Schedule annual GP check-up
  • Mental health: seek help in time with grief, emptiness or identity questions
  • Sleep: keep a rhythm despite the free time
  • Nutrition: cook deliberately and varied — alone or together

Purpose & direction

For decades, work gave you answers without you having to ask the questions. What do I do today, where do I belong, why am I here. Without that obviousness it can get quiet — and that's often where something new begins. No roadmap below, just a few entry points to become curious again.

Suggested checklist· 5 points
  • Take the Life Design Quiz — find what truly energises you
  • Take a new study or online course that sparks curiosity
  • Try 10 minutes of meditation or silence daily
  • Write down: 5 things you always wanted to learn or do
  • Monthly reflection: what energised me, what drained me?

Paperwork & admin

The least romantic part of this phase, and at the same time a form of love for the people who come after you. A quiet hour on your will, power of attorney and wishes prevents a lot of awkwardness later — and gives you peace of mind that it's sorted. Below the basics, in no particular order.

Suggested checklist· 5 points
  • Will and living will up to date?
  • Power of attorney and mentorship arranged
  • Review insurance: health, home, travel, liability
  • Digital legacy: passwords, accounts, photos
  • Personal wishes documented and discussed with loved ones

Housing & environment

The house that was perfect for raising a family, or for two careers and commuting, doesn't have to be the same anymore. Sometimes it fits just fine for years to come. Sometimes a new place is the loveliest gift to yourself. Below a few questions to answer honestly — before deciding anything.

Suggested checklist· 5 points
  • Comfort check (thresholds, bathroom, single-floor living)
  • Energy efficiency and maintenance in order
  • Neighbourhood bond: do you know your neighbours? Amenities close?
  • Consider moving, downsizing or consciously staying
  • Explore alternative housing (co-housing, communities)

Travel & discovery

Finally no longer tied to school holidays or that one free week between projects. The world is open — and exactly that freedom brings the question: where do I really want to go, and with whom? A short trip or three months through South America; solo or in a group. Below a few considerations before you book.

Suggested checklist· 5 points
  • Make a bucket list of 5 destinations you truly want to see
  • Decide whether you want to travel solo, as a couple or in a group
  • Check travel insurance and any medical prep needed
  • Explore culture and adventure trips, not just beaches
  • Plan at least one long trip (3+ weeks) — letting go consciously
