Career Prospects

Career Prospects in Medicine After completing medical studies, extensive opportunities open up in Dutch healthcare. As a basic doctor, graduates can immediately work as a resident not in specialist training (ANIOS) in hospitals or healthcare institutions. Many choose to continue to specialist training, such as general practice, cardiology, psychiatry or surgery. These follow-up programs last two to six years and lead to recognition as a medical specialist. Healthcare offers work in various sectors: hospitals, general practices, mental health institutions, elderly care and rehabilitation centers. Additionally, there are opportunities in public health, medical research, pharmaceutical industry or as an occupational physician. The flexibility of the medical degree also enables careers in medical journalism, policy-making or medical technology. Expected Developments Opportunities lie in the aging population, which creates ongoing demand for medical care. Digitalization and e-health create new working methods and specializations. Preventive care and lifestyle medicine are gaining importance. Threats include high work pressure in healthcare, staff shortages leading to overload, and increasing administrative burdens. Specialist training has limited training positions, which brings competition.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is transforming the WO Medicine study program by integrating technology in diagnosis and treatment, expanding curricula with topics such as data analysis, machine learning and digital healthcare. Students learn to use AI tools for patient care and research purposes. Career prospects are also shifting; graduates can expect roles in innovative healthcare technologies, telemedicine and personalized medicine, which increases employment and promotes new forms of collaboration with technology companies.
