What will you learn?

(Frontend Design en Development) In the AD program Frontend Design and Development, you learn to design and build websites and web applications that are both visually appealing and technically strong. You get a solid foundation in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, where you learn to create responsive websites that work well on all devices. Additionally, you develop skills in modern frameworks like React or Vue.js and learn to work with design tools like Figma and Adobe Creative Suite. The program combines creative design principles with technical programming skills, where you master user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design. What's unique about this AD is the practice-oriented approach where you work on real projects for regional companies from day one. You complete internships at web development agencies, marketing agencies or internal IT departments where you gain direct experience with client contact and project management. The two-year program quickly prepares you for the job market, unlike a four-year bachelor's program where more theory and research are central. This program is perfect for creative MBO graduates or HAVO students who want to quickly advance to a technical role in the digital sector.

Required Education

For admission to this AD program, you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma in a relevant field such as Application and Media Developer, Media Designer or ICT Management, or a HAVO diploma. The HAVO profile Culture & Society (C&M) fits best because this profile combines creativity with analytical thinking, which is essential for frontend development where you must master both design principles and logical programming structures. Economics & Society (E&M) is also suitable because you learn to think strategically about user experience and market needs. In secondary school, subjects like computer science, mathematics and art subjects are valuable - computer science for programming basics, mathematics for logical thinking and art subjects for developing your visual sense. Some universities of applied sciences require a motivation letter or portfolio with creative work. With a VWO diploma you are naturally also admitted, and there are 21+ regulations for adults without formal diplomas but with relevant work experience in IT or design.

Career Prospects

After graduation, you can immediately start working as a Frontend Developer, UI/UX Designer, Web Developer or Junior Full-stack Developer at web development agencies, marketing agencies, e-commerce companies or internal IT departments of larger organizations. You work in sectors ranging from tech startups to traditional companies that want to strengthen their digital presence, or at government institutions that need modern websites and applications. As a starter, you can expect a salary between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on your employer and region. Growth opportunities are excellent: you can advance to Senior Developer, Team Lead or Product Owner, or you can start your own web development agency. You can also continue after your AD to the third year of a full HBO bachelor's program like Communication & Multimedia Design or Computer Science to further increase your chances for management and leadership positions.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is fundamentally transforming AD Frontend Design and Development. Programming is shifting toward AI-assisted development with tools like GitHub Copilot. Students must learn to collaborate with AI, master prompt engineering and focus on complex problem-solving that AI cannot automate. The demand for IT professionals remains high, but the work is changing dramatically.
